Lakewood Alumni (lakewoodalumni.com) is a volunteer-run website for graduates of Lakewood High School in Lake Odessa, Michigan. This page explains, in plain language, what information the site collects, who can see it, and the choices you have. We don’t sell your information, and we don’t show advertising.
What we collect
When you request to join
Your username, email address, and password (stored in scrambled form; nobody, including the site administrator, can see it), your name, your class year, and, if you choose to give them, your name in high school and your city and state. The administrator uses this to confirm you’re a Lakewood alum before approving your account.
On your profile
Anything you add to your profile, such as what you’ve been up to, a profile photo, and contact details (an email for classmates, phone number, Facebook or LinkedIn link). All of these are optional.
When you post or comment
The content you share, plus the name and email address attached to it.
Automatically
Like nearly every website, the site records basic technical information when you visit, such as your IP address and browser type. This is used only to keep the site secure and working, for example to block repeated failed login attempts.
Who can see your information
- Visitors who aren’t logged in can see public pages like the home page and announcements. They cannot see member profiles or the alumni directory.
- Logged-in members can see your name, class year, name in high school, and city, unless you change who can see the optional items.
- Your contact details (email for classmates, phone, social links) are shown only to members you’ve accepted as connections, unless you choose otherwise. You control this for each item on your profile.
- Your login email address is never shown to other members.
- The site administrator can see account details in order to approve members and keep the site running.
Connections
Members can send each other a request to connect. Nothing is shared until you accept. You can ignore a request, and you can remove a connection at any time.
Cookies
The site uses a small number of cookies needed to keep you logged in and to remember basic settings. We don’t use advertising or tracking cookies.
Services that help run the site
A few trusted services handle information on our behalf, only to provide their part of the site:
- Cloudflare protects the site from attacks and delivers pages quickly. It sees visitors’ IP addresses and basic connection information.
- SMTP2GO delivers the site’s emails, such as approval notices and password resets. It processes your email address and the content of those emails.
- Wordfence is security software that runs on the site. It records IP addresses and login attempts to block attacks.
- Akismet checks comments for spam. If you leave a comment, its content, your name, email address, and IP address are sent to Akismet for checking.
Photos and yearbooks
The site shares scanned yearbooks and photos donated by alumni so classmates can enjoy them. Full yearbooks and photo galleries are available to approved members only. If you appear in a photo or yearbook page and would like it removed, contact us and we’ll take care of it.
Please respect your classmates’ privacy
Only share information about yourself. Never post another person’s contact details or personal information without their permission. Accounts that break this rule may be removed.
How long we keep information
Your account information is kept for as long as you have an account. If a request to join isn’t approved, it is deleted. Security logs are kept only as long as needed to protect the site.
Your choices
- Change or remove profile information at any time from your profile.
- Control who sees each optional item on your profile.
- Delete your account yourself from your account settings. This removes your profile and connections.
- Ask us for a copy of the information we have about you, or ask us to correct or delete it.
Children
This site is intended for adult alumni. We don’t knowingly collect information from children under 13.
Changes to this policy
If we make important changes, we’ll update the date at the top of this page and post a note on the site.
